Expansive Mortar

When blasting is not an option, for rock that cannot be hammered, and the specific geology is not favorable to hydraulic rock splitting, expansive mortars can be the best and only way to remove and break the rock. Closely spaced holes are drilled into the rock and then an expansive mortar is poured into the holes. After sitting for several days, cracks will begin to form allowing a hydraulic hammer to further break up the rock so it can be removed. The use of expansive mortars is an expensive rock removal technique, however it is really priceless when there is no other way to remove the rock.
